The Legs of Lolth
SotG - Feedback
I’m sure you’ve all noticed that I’m a little obsessed with getting feedback. I wanted to take this opportunity to explain why I think it makes the game better, instead of just continuing to harass people. I about decided to not put this up, because I didn’t want to just be complaining. I figure the whole point of these posts is to let you know what I’m thinking, though, and this is a very big part of that.
The most important reason is that it’s the only way I know to let this be our story, collectively, rather than just my story that you all have to play in. I realize that I have not been doing a good job of clearly progressing the story. I’m working on that, though. And I want it to involve all the characters, not just my NPCs. The main motive factor in the story is pretty serious, but I don’t want it to be dragging everything else along blindly. I want to craft motives and conflicts tailored to a PC, or even better, a few of them. I need you to tell me what they are, though.
The other significant reason for my requests is to affirm to me that you care about what’s going on. My primary goal is to create something we can all enjoy together, and it can be hard to know if I’m succeeding. The biggest tradeoff we make for the ability to play long-distance, from my perspective, is a very limited sense of how the game is being received. Frankly, and selfishly, it can be hard to get interested in writing adventures when I don’t know if anyone cares about the work I’m putting in. It’s a fact of the genre that the GM puts in more time than everyone else, but 15 minutes out of your life between sessions would help me a lot. I think we’re all artists to some degree here, so I’m sure you can understand how a little feedback can make a big difference. Even if it’s all criticism, knowing that someone else is invested in my creative endeavor makes all the difference in the world. The more I know you care, the more I am going to care, and the better I’m going to create.
I hope this doesn’t come off too much as complaining. I’m not looking for recognition here, and certainly not anything like pity, just for a little help and support. I would rather see you adding your own work to the campaign than telling me “good job” or something (not that that’s not also appreciated). Any way you feel inclined to contribute, I will embrace. Obsidian Portal is a great place for it, and you can now make pages or parts of pages secret between the you, the GM, and any other people you choose. If that’s not for you, feel free to Skype or email me, or whatever else is convenient.
